| A line of
demons here before the entrance to Angkor Thom. They're pulling on
the Naga (that Churning of the Ocean of Milk story again). |
These are
the gods on the other side, pulling on their end of the Naga. |
It
was a big deal that the demons & gods cooperated on this Naga
tug-of-war churning process. |
This was a
friendly demon who invited me to make myself comfortable. |
This gateway,
or gopura, to Angkor Thom has some faces on each top corner,
foreshadowing the faces to come. |
The Bayon,
within the Angkor Thom complex, looks like a mess of old ruined piles
of stone from a distance. |
But up close
these faces emerge everywhere. |
There's
a face in the distance to the left, while a lion is in the foreground. |
There's another
face, peeking through a doorway. |
And
that's a Buddhist monk through a doorway. |
Another
doorway. I sense a theme. |
Ok,
I liked doorways. There's an old Buddhist guy who got a dollar out
of me for lighting a stick of incense in there. |
Some
more of those faces. Look closely. |
Also
in Angkor Thom is the Elephant Terrace, with two 3-headed elephants
pulling up lilies. |
The
whole Elephant Terrace wall is covered with a procession of elephants.
|
One
of those faces is not made of stone. |
