| Banteay Srei,
like the other temples around Angkor, also features doorways. |
Banteay Srei
is a little farther away than most of the other temples. |
But
it's so beautiful and unique that it's definitely worth the drive.
|
The relief
work here is much deeper and more detailed than anywhere else. |
That's a garuda,
half man-half bird, and the vehicle of Vishnu. (As well as the airline
of Indonesia.) |
There's some
fighting monkeys. Naughty monkeys. |
The
stone used in Banteay Srei is a luscious reddish color. |
There's another
naga. Naga and garuda are arch enemies, even though they're both pals
with the gods & helped out for the Churning of the Ocean of Milk.
|
Some
demonic details. |
|
|
There's
that same architectural reference to the 5 peaks of Mount Meru. |
This
was the only temple we visited that was cordoned off anywhere. Probably
within a few years all the temples will have restricted access. |
Up
on Phnom Bakheng, there I am, getting all excited about a linga. |
This
garuda had no head until I came along. |
Phnom
Bakheng is the highest point in Angkor and is renowned for great sunsets
and great views of Angkor Wat. This shows where that would be if we
saw it, but we had uncooperative weather conditions on our journey.

This
is Ta Prohm, a temple that's famous for having fallen into terrible
ruins. Those are just the roots of a tree that has overtaken the buildings.
